Materials:
- Beans
- Two identical cups
- Soil
- Water
Procedure:
Write your name on both of your cups.
Take two similar seeds. Draw a picture of each seed in your science journal.
Write beneath the seed pictures what you predict: Which part of the seed will the root push through? From which part of the seed will the stem of the plant grow?
Now, put soil in your cups and plant the seed by placing the seed on the lop layer of the soil and then placing two inches of soil on top of it (use a ruler to monitor the depth, we want all of our plants to grow under the same conditions). Now, mark the cup on the left with an X. This is the cup that we will leave dry. The other cup will get 1/2 cup of water now. Pour the water on your seed and put your cups on the windowsill.
Answer these questions in your journal: When do you think the plants will emerge? Which plant will emerge first? Why do you think so?
