Procedure:

Wrap a Band-Aid around one finger.  Leave the bandage on for two days.  Remove the bandage and notice the color of the skin that was previously covered.  How does it compare with the skin on the rest of your finger?  Write down what you observe in your science journal.

Why?

Special cells in animals contain dark brown grains called melanin.  When the bandage covers the skin and prevents light from reaching it, the melanin groups together and makes the skin appear pale.  Melanin responds to light by spreading out, causing the skin to be much darker.  People with dark skin have more melanin.  Albinos have no melanin in their skin.  Albinos have white skin.
